There is no doubt that public email has changed the way the world communicates. Almost everyone uses email without recognizing or thinking about the inherent costs and dangers in the present system. They simply have allowed it to become an intrusive part of their lives without concern for their and their family's safety and security. And some unscrupulous folks have taken advantage and have created a downright costly and dangerous environment- for all of us.
Over 50% of the tens of billions of emails sent worldwide each day are unsolicited and unwanted. At a Federal Trade Commission sponsored workshop in 2004 called to deal with the ever growing problem of the barrage of unsolicited junk email and which included top industry experts, no consensus was reached on anything except the fact that the problem was getting worse minute by minute. In spite of filters and blockers and all manner of technological and governmental attempts, the average American receives over 2200 Spam and junk mail messages per year. Unfortunately, spam filters don't work because they will filter out legitimate mail.
Most honest businesses quit sending unsolicited email after Congress passed the "CanSpam Act." That means the people sending the junk these days are not only probable lawbreakers, but also unethical, unscrupulous people who would just as soon rip you off as say hello. Because of security issues, even the U.S. Defense Department had to block access to Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL and Gmail for overseas Troops in October, 2005, due to the fact that access to such services left the unclassified government network too susceptible to hackers and computer viruses. We cannot prevent our lives being interrupted by all manner of people we don't know and don't care to know. Once someone knows how to find you- knows your public email address- you're fair game. Unfortunately, even child predators use and abuse the email system to solicit our children and advertise porn.
Everyone knows that internet mail is a necessity in the 21st century. But is there a solution or an alternative to the problem plagued system of public email when no one owns public email? There is a company that has spent the last two years in research and development on a new service and an entirely new form of internet mail, using 128-bit SSL encrypted connections for all communications.
